A Pinterest description generator writes the text under your pin, the part Pinterest reads to decide which searches the pin belongs in. Our pick is SiteToSocial’s Pin Title & Description Generator, because it reads your actual page and builds each description on a keyword checked against Pinterest search data. It’s free for 3 runs a day. The other free generators, the real length limit and templates for 8 niches follow.

The best free Pinterest description generators

Each tool starts from something different: a page, an image, a short brief. That starting point decides how specific the description can get.

1. SiteToSocial: written from the page, not from a guess

Give it a URL and SiteToSocial reads the page before writing anything, so the descriptions mention what’s really there: the tie waist on a dress, the 30-minute cook time, the three neighborhoods in a travel post. Each of the five pins gets its own researched keyword, shown under the pin with a character counter. Everything stays inside 500 characters.

Here is one it published as a sample, for a linen dress product page (242 characters):

“This linen wrap dress in soft sage green is the one you’ll pack for every trip. Breathable washed linen, a tie waist you can adjust and hidden side pockets. Style it with sandals at the beach or white sneakers in the city. Shop the dress now”

Keyword: linen wrap dress. First sentence, real product details, a closing call to action. Nothing wasted.

2. Cloud Campaign: when all you have is the image

Upload the pin graphic and Cloud Campaign writes from what it sees. Paste the brand’s website and it pulls in context for the voice, and you can set tone, length, hashtags and emojis. No login for your first descriptions. The keywords are the AI’s guess, so check them in Pinterest search.

3. Mailmodo and 4. RecurPost: quick drafts from a brief

Mailmodo asks for the pin topic, a category, an audience (busy parents, foodies, students) and a tone, then returns several options. RecurPost writes one title and one description from a short brief, ready to move into its scheduler. Both are fine starting points if you bring your own keyword.

What should a Pinterest description include?

A good Pinterest description includes the searched keyword in its first sentence, what the reader gets, a few concrete details and a call to action. (How many keywords is enough? See Pinterest description keywords.) In order:

  1. The keyword, early. The exact phrase people type, in sentence one.
  2. The payoff. What the page delivers: the result, the steps, the time it takes.
  3. One or two related phrases. “Small living room ideas” can sit next to “tiny apartment decor”. Natural, never forced.
  4. Details only your page has. Ingredients, materials, sizes, places. These make it believable, and they’re what generic AI text leaves out.
  5. A call to action. “Get the full recipe.” “Shop the earrings.” “Save this for your next trip.”

Hashtags are optional. If you use them, two to five at the very end; the sentences above do the real work. Our Pinterest hashtag guide explains when they’re worth adding.

How long should a Pinterest description be?

Pinterest’s pin builder allows 500 characters for a description. You’ll also see 800 quoted around the web: that’s the ceiling in Pinterest’s API, the route scheduling tools use to post. Write for 500 and you’re safe everywhere.

SituationLength that works
Most blog and idea pins150 to 300 characters
Recipes, products, travel guides300 to 500 characters (details sell the click)
Pinterest pin builder limit500 characters
Pinterest API limit (schedulers)800 characters

Descriptions don’t appear in the home feed or search results. People see them only after opening a pin, and only the first line or two before “more”. So that first sentence carries the keyword for search and the hook for the person reading.

Are Pinterest descriptions important for SEO?

Yes. Pinterest search reads the description, along with the title, alt text and board, to work out what a pin is about and which searches it can appear in. The title still weighs more. Treat the description as the place for context and the second and third keywords you couldn’t fit in 100 characters. For the bigger picture, see our Pinterest SEO guide.

Can AI write Pinterest descriptions?

Yes, AI can write Pinterest descriptions, and good ones are hard to tell from hand-written copy. Pinterest doesn’t penalize text for being AI-written. What gets pins ignored is text that’s vague, wrong about the page, or copied across dozens of pins. Our ChatGPT prompts for Pinterest show how to brief an AI properly. Either way, edit every draft:

  • Does the first sentence contain the keyword you want to rank for?
  • Is every claim true for the page the pin links to?
  • Is there at least one detail a generic AI couldn’t have guessed?
  • Is it different from the descriptions on your other pins for this page?
  • Does it end by telling the reader what to do?

Board descriptions are a separate job

Every board has its own description too, and it’s easy to forget. One or two sentences with the board’s main keyword and a couple of related ones are enough. It helps Pinterest file the whole board, not just one pin. The board name generator page has names to match, and our Pinterest board description guide has 24 examples.

Once a description is done, check it next to its title in the pin preview and SEO checker.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Pinterest description generator?

A Pinterest description generator is a tool that writes the text under a pin from a keyword, topic, image or page link. The useful ones put a searched keyword in the first sentence, add details and a call to action, and keep within Pinterest's 500-character limit.

What is the best Pinterest description generator?

SiteToSocial's free Pin Title & Description Generator is the strongest option we found, because it reads your page and builds each description on a keyword checked against Pinterest search data, in 30 languages. Cloud Campaign is a good choice when all you have is the pin image.

How long should a Pinterest description be?

Pinterest's pin builder allows 500 characters for a description; its API, which scheduling tools use, accepts up to 800. Most pins need 150 to 300 characters. Use the full 500 when details sell the click, as with recipes and products.

Should Pinterest descriptions include keywords?

Yes. Put the exact phrase people search in the first sentence, then one or two related phrases later on. Write them the way a person would; repeating one keyword five times reads as spam.

Will an AI-written description hurt my pins?

No. Pinterest judges a pin on relevance and how people respond to it, not on who wrote the text. AI descriptions only hurt when they are vague, inaccurate or identical across many pins, so read and edit every draft.

Does a description generator write the pin title too?

Some do. SiteToSocial, RecurPost's post generator and RightBlogger write the title and description together. Cloud Campaign and Mailmodo focus on the description, so pair them with a Pinterest title generator.

Should every pin have a different description?

Yes, when several pins point to the same page. Give each pin its own keyword and wording so each one can be found for a different search. Pasting one description onto ten pins wastes nine of them.
