A strong Pinterest product description opens with the phrase people search for the product (“hammered gold hoop earrings”, not your SKU or shop name), adds two or three concrete details, says who it’s for or when to use it, and ends with a short reason to click. Around 150 to 300 characters. It’s not your Etsy or Shopify description pasted in: that one is written for your store’s search and runs far longer than the 500 characters Pinterest takes.
The product description formula
| Part | What goes in | Example (gold hoops) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Searched phrase | Product type plus the attribute people search | Hammered gold hoop earrings |
| 2. Details | Material, size, weight, color, finish | 14k gold filled, 1.5 g each, nickel free |
| 3. Use or person | Occasion, style, recipient | Light enough for everyday wear; gift boxed |
| 4. Reason to click | What they’ll find on the page | See the sizes and the matching necklace |
Here’s a real one. SiteToSocial’s free Pin Title & Description Generator published this for a sample jewelry product page (296 characters, keyword: hammered gold hoop earrings):

Hammered Gold Hoop Earrings You Can Wear Every Day
Looking for hammered gold hoop earrings that feel light all day? These 14k gold filled hoops are hand textured in the studio, so each pair catches the light a little differently. Just 1.5 g per earring, nickel free, and gift boxed. Perfect for everyday wear or a thoughtful handmade jewelry gift.
Searched phrase in the first sentence. Real numbers. A use and a gift angle. No price, no exclamation marks, no hashtags.
Shop listing vs Pinterest pin: same product, different job
Marketplace titles are written for marketplace search, so they pile up keywords. On Pinterest that reads like spam, and the useful part gets cut.
| Etsy listing | Pinterest pin | |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Gold Hoop Earrings Hammered Hoops Gift for Her 14k Gold Filled Dainty Minimalist | Hammered Gold Hoop Earrings You Can Wear Every Day |
| Description | Long: materials, shipping, care, policies, sizes | One short paragraph with the phrase first and the best two details |
| Who reads it | Shoppers already looking to buy | People browsing ideas, often months before they buy |
That last row matters. Many Pinterest users are planning, not shopping yet. A description that helps them picture the product (with what, for which occasion, in which room) earns the save that brings them back.

Catalog pins, Rich Pins and your own pins
Where a product pin’s text comes from depends on how it was made.
- Shopify catalog pins. Pinterest’s app for Shopify syncs your catalog, and product pins take their title and description from your store. So the first sentence of each Shopify description is effectively your pin description. Make it open with the searched phrase.
- Etsy. There’s no native catalog connection between Etsy and Pinterest, so Etsy sellers make pins that link to their listings, by hand or with a tool. You write the description yourself, which is good news: it can be the version above, not the listing text.
- Rich Pins. With product Rich Pin data on the page, Pinterest can show the price and pull the title and description from your site, unless you type your own before publishing. Check what your pages send with a Rich Pins validator.
The shop setup itself, app by app, is covered in our guide to Pinterest automation for Etsy and Shopify.
One product, five pins
Pinterest favors fresh pins, and a product can carry several. Change the photo and the angle, and write each description around a different search:
| Angle | Searched phrase (linen dress) |
|---|---|
| The product | linen wrap dress |
| Color | sage green dress |
| Styling | green dress outfit |
| Style or aesthetic | minimalist summer dress |
| Cut | linen midi dress |
Those five phrases are the ones SiteToSocial’s generator picked for its sample dress page, one per pin. A Pinterest keyword tool finds yours. How many to use in each description? Our guide to Pinterest description keywords has the answer.
Mistakes that cost shops clicks
- Price or “SALE” first. Prices change; the searched phrase doesn’t. Lead with the product.
- The full listing pasted in, shipping policy included, then cut off mid-sentence.
- Marketplace keyword piles. “Gift for her gift for mom birthday gift” reads as spam on Pinterest.
- Every pin the same. Ten pins with one description look like duplicates. Vary the angle.
- Promises the photo can’t keep. If the listing photo shows one color, don’t describe five.
Write product pins for a whole shop
Forty listings, five pins each, fresh copy every time: that’s the job most sellers never finish. SiteToSocial is built for it. It reads your shop pages (from a sitemap, or a list of links for Etsy), finds a searched phrase for each product, writes the title and description, designs the pin from your real product photos and posts it daily, from $10 per website a month. For a single product, the free generator gives you five descriptions like the jewelry example above. It’s our first choice in the ranking of the best Pinterest automation tools, and shops are a big reason why.
Frequently asked questions
How do you write a Pinterest description for a product?
Open with the phrase people search for the product, such as "hammered gold hoop earrings", then add two or three concrete details (material, size, color, how it is used), who it is for or the occasion, and a short reason to click. Around 150 to 300 characters is enough.
Should I copy my Etsy or Shopify description into Pinterest?
No. Shop descriptions are long and written for your store's search. Pinterest descriptions are limited to 500 characters and only the start shows, so write a short version that opens with a phrase people search on Pinterest.
Should I put the price in a Pinterest product description?
Not at the start. If your page has product Rich Pin data, Pinterest can show the price from your site. Lead with what the product is and why someone would want it.
Where do Shopify product pin descriptions come from?
Product pins created from a Shopify catalog through Pinterest's app use the title and description from your store. Making the first sentence of each product description Pinterest-friendly improves those pins.
How many pins should I make per product?
Several over time, each aimed at a different search: the product itself, a gift idea, a styling idea, a season. Use a different photo and description for each, published weeks apart.
