The formula: three parts, in this order
- The board’s phrase, in a sentence. Repeat the board name naturally, with a word that says what kind of ideas these are: easy, budget, beginner, modern.
- Two or three related phrases. The variations people also search: “autumn nail designs”, “fall nail colors”.
- Who it’s for, or what they’ll find. “For small apartments”, “with step-by-step tutorials”, “recipes ready in 30 minutes”.
That’s it. No sign-off, no “follow for more!”, no emoji row. A description is a short promise about the board, read by the people who land on it and by Pinterest working out what it’s about.

Notice the pattern. The board name appears in the first sentence, nearly word for word. A second sentence adds the related searches (“autumn nail designs”, “small apartment living room”). Every one of them lands between about 170 and 230 characters.

How to add or change a board description
On desktop, go to your profile, open Saved and hover over the board; a pencil icon appears. Click it, type the description and save. In the app, open the board, tap the three dots in the top right and choose Edit. That’s how Pinterest’s community team describes it, and they add one limit: there’s no bold or other formatting in the description field. Plain text only.

Do board descriptions matter for Pinterest SEO?
Yes, as context. Pinterest’s own business tips have long told creators to use keywords in board names and descriptions, because boards help Pinterest understand what the pins saved to them are about. The board name does most of that work. The description backs it up with related phrases the name can’t fit into 50 characters. Is it the biggest lever on Pinterest? Five mistakes that waste the field
- Leaving it empty. Still the most common one.
- A hashtag list instead of sentences.
- Keyword piles: “fall nails autumn nails nail art fall nail ideas nail designs”. Pinterest reads phrases in context; readers read spam.
- Talking about yourself (“My favorite things I’ve found!”) instead of the topic.
- Describing a board that’s wider than its name. If the description needs five topics, the board probably needs splitting.
Sections don’t fix that last one, by the way. They get a name and nothing more, so the description lives on the board.
